RVQuizCorp is the quiz club of RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, one of India's most well known engineering colleges. RVQuizCorp had its humble beginnings about ten years ago when two enterprising quizzers Avinash Mudaliar and Gopal Srinivasan, decided that a stage for testing mental prowess was of order in RVCE. Buoyed by the signs of interest shown by the students and the encouragement of the then principal, Prof. M.R. Holla, quizzing in RVCE emerged to be more than a hobby – it became a culture. Ever since, the tiny seed of an idea has transformed into the dense foliage of intellect and profundity it now is.
RVQuizCorp is among the most widely respected and, most feared quizzing clubs in the country. As quizzers and quizmasters, its members have displayed their mettle at every conceivable level.
To nurture and encourage budding quizzing talent in the college, RVQuizcorp organizes weekly quizzes and meetings. Come rain or shine, juniors and seniors from the club assemble week after week at our favourite haunt, "On the Rocks" at Cubbon Park. Topics for these meetings have been quite eclectic, ranging from popular subjects like Music and Sport to highly specific and specialized ones like Harry Potter and Combat Aircraft. Besides these regular quizzes, an annual event called 'Funda Mental' is conducted to determine the best team in college. The credo of the club is not just to increase the general awareness levels of its members, but also to inculcate in them the ability to think differently.
RVCE is the only institution in the country to have sent three teams to the prestigious BBC University Challenge Quiz hosted by Siddharth Basu on BBC World. A team consisting of final year students was invited for an exhibition round to kick off the inaugural season of the BBC University Challenge where they were pitted against Glasgow University, U.K. Then on, two pre-final year teams have made it to the televised rounds in the inaugural (2003) and the second season (2004).
This was the 11th edition of UTPT held from the 20th to the 22nd of March 2009. UTPT 2009 witnessed a huge participation from college across the country and schools from Bangalore.
Under The Peepal Tree 2008 marked the 10th edition of this quizzing fest. A major milestone thus achieved. The turn out at the quizzes was good and full of enthusiasm as always. The informal quizzes included drinks n beverages, 10 questions having to do something with the number 10 celebrating the 10th UTPT, 'beepography' and others.
Great turnout. everything good. Informals included death, desserts, mergers and acquisitions and more. We had jam packed pavilion at the KSCA venue of the open quiz and corporate quiz.
Putting it succinctly, Under the Peepal Tree 2006 was a tremendous success, both as a quiz fest and as a managerial venture by RVQuizcorp. Graced with the participation of more than 200 teams, the fest was the epitome of quizzing. Garnering a lot of attention through newspaper write-ups and photo-ops, the fest attracted the participation of premier institutes such as IIM Bangalore, KMC – Manipal, NLSIU - Bangalore and Anna University – Chennai apart from Bangalore institutes such as MSRIT, BMSCE and CMRIT.
Dedicated to the memory of Wing Commander Mulky, who was instrumental in setting up the Karnataka Quiz Association, which continues to inspire quizzing in Karnataka, the fest kicked off with a tough preliminary written round for the General Quiz, which was taken by more than seventy teams of three. This set the tone as far as the quizzing level for the subsequent quizzes went. IndiGenius – an India quiz, Game Theory – a Sports quiz and a much praised Ψ Tech – Science and Technology quiz then took enthralled enthusiasts to dizzying heights of quizzing. Thus, the first two days of the fest were dedicated completely to the conduct of quizzes at the college level, during which Rupees Seventy Thousand was given away as prize money.
The last day of the fest focused on Audi-Vidi-Vici - an Audio-Visual extravaganza and Fine Answers – the Corporate Quiz. Teams from Microsoft, ICICI Bank, Ernst & Young, Infosys, Wipro, Sun Microsystems and other corporate heavyweights battled it out for the grand prize of Rupees Fifteen Thousand at Fine Answers, with Infosys - Chennai ultimately walking away with the honours.
Apart from the main quizzes, there were also many informal quizzes, with topics as wide ranging as the Golden Girls of Hollywood, Harley Davidson, Literati and Cigarettes. Prizes for these informal quizzes were meals at fine restaurants in and around the city. The ever-present audience was treated to a great three days of quizzing and question setting. All in all, ‘Under The Peepal Tree 2006’ was a quizzing spectacle that set the quizzing circuit of Bangalore ablaze with its memorable fundae.
